Why this matters

The call responds to geopolitical developments that may constrain academic research in the United States. Through it, VUB offers excellent US-based researchers a stable and supportive environment in Europe: a place to continue their work, build new partnerships, and contribute to key societal challenges.

About the project

The call was launched on 5 March 2026 and targets US-based researchers working on climate, sustainability, and well-being. Selected researchers are embedded within a VUB host group with access to infrastructure and support services.

Full-time chairs. Up to three positions of three years, with up to 500,000 euros in total funding.

Part-time chairs. Up to two positions with 100,000 to 120,000 euros in total funding.

Who can apply. Researchers who hold a PhD, are based in the United States, demonstrate an excellent scientific profile, and conduct research in climate or sustainability. Applications include a CV and publication list, a research plan and motivation, and a support letter from a VUB host professor.

Current status of the project

First appointment
Professor Valerie Trouet (University of Arizona), an interdisciplinary researcher integrating tree-ring and multi-source data to analyse climate variability, forest ecosystems, and their societal impacts. Part-time chair for three years with a total budget of 120,000 euros covering salary, accommodation, and research costs.

Two professors have expressed interest, and their applications are expected (names withheld until appointments are confirmed).

Outreach
A targeted LinkedIn campaign generated about 14,500 impressions (0.9% click-through); the organic post reached over 4,500 users with 22 reposts. The call also runs on the VUB website, SharePoint, and internal channels.
