PEACE was first submitted to the Helios Foundation in December 2024 as a complete renovation of the neonatal intensive care unit at HUDERF (Laeken). Since then, the HUB has formally committed to rebuilding the Children’s Hospital on the Anderlecht campus around 2032, uniting maternity, delivery rooms, a combined neonatal intensive care unit, and all specialised paediatrics on one campus. Investing around 350,000 euros in a full renovation of a unit with five to six years of residual life would not be a responsible use of the donation. The project has therefore been re-proposed around what creates the most durable impact now: parent spaces and targeted improvements for care teams, across both sites. The consolidated dossier is pending the Board’s decision.

At HUDERF (Laeken). Works would focus exclusively on parent spaces, without touching newborn care areas: a redesigned parent area (comfortable lounge, equipped kitchenette, rest area with a nap bed, adapted sanitary facilities), acoustic and lighting improvements in family areas, secure lockers and a workspace for long stays, plus simple, high-impact adaptations to staff work and rest areas.

At Hôpital Erasme (Anderlecht). Part of the n* rooms would move from the second floor to the former maternity corridor, closer to the NICU. This would improve care for still-fragile newborns, keep mothers near their child, support the mother-child bond and breastfeeding, and reduce parental stress. The freed maternity rooms would become hotel rooms and a genuine parents’ space (co-working, shared kitchen, lounge) designed for extended stays.
